A town on the Carpathian border, Medzilaborce sees its community swept up in the spring, stripped of its possessions, then driven to assembly camps and convoys heading east.
Medzilaborce, the last Slovak town before the Lupków pass, held a Yiddish-speaking community closely tied to that of neighboring Galicia, with whom it shared Hasidic customs and family alliances. The Jews there traded in timber, livestock, and goods that crossed the border. In the spring, the authorities of the Slovak state gathered the community and the families from the villages of the district, then handed them over to convoys that crossed the Carpathians northward. Medzilaborce lost its entire Jewish population.
