Warned that the pits were being dug, the ghetto rises with axe and fire, breaks through the barricade and throws its inhabitants toward the Polesie marshes; most are caught, a few hundred survive and fight.
Lakhva, in Polesia, is one of the very first ghettos in Eastern Europe to rise up. Warned that the pits were being dug, the clandestine committee gives the signal: the inhabitants set fire to the houses, fall upon the guards with axes, and force their way through the barrier toward the marshes. Most are caught and shot, but several hundred reach the forests and fight among the partisans.
