The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Kurenets ghetto

9 septembre 1942·Kurenets

Toll
environ un millier de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto inhabitants are gathered in the square then shot at the edge of pits dug at the edge of the town; part of the youth had fled in the preceding weeks to the forests of Naliboki, where they fought in partisan detachments.

The enclosed quarter of Kurenets, near Vileïka, is liquidated in the autumn: the inhabitants are gathered in the square and led in columns to the pits at the edge of the town. A few men had hidden in cellars dug beneath the houses; discovered by dogs in the days that followed, most are shot on the spot. A handful of escapees will join the armed groups in the marshes.
