The Jews from the entire region were concentrated in the small town; on the Day of Atonement, gathered in the market square for a supposed departure, some of them threw themselves at the guards bare-handed. The shooting began in the square itself, then the survivors were finished off in the nearby park. It is one of the rare gestures of collective resistance recorded during the autumn killings.
The Jews from across northern Lithuania had been concentrated in Žagarė during the summer, turning the small town into an immense place of waiting. On the Day of Atonement, they were gathered in the marketplace under the pretext of a transfer to a labor camp. Several men, warned by rumors from neighboring towns, threw themselves barehanded at the guards; the shooting began in the square itself and the survivors were finished off in the adjoining park. This is one of the rare acts of collective resistance recorded during the massacres of the Lithuanian autumn.
