The small community of Vršac is arrested along with all the Jews of the Banat and directed toward the camps where they will be murdered in the following months.
Vršac, a wine-growing town in eastern Banat near the Romanian border, was home to a modest but long-established Jewish community, integrated into the commercial life of the region. The German administration installed after the dismemberment of the country relied on the local German-speaking minority to enforce anti-Jewish measures: marking, confiscation of businesses, restrictions on movement. When the general expulsion of the Jews of Banat was ordered, the community of Vršac was rounded up along with the others and transported to the camps opened near the Serbian capital. It was annihilated in the months that followed — men shot first, then women and children.
