The Shoah (1939–1945)
Massacre of Ukmergė
5 sept. 1941·Ukmergė
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The community of the town, one of the largest in the province, is shot in the Pivonija woods, men, women and children on the same day.
Ukmergė was home to an ancient community, renowned for its houses of study. The Jews of the town and the surrounding villages, held since summer in the Pivonija barracks, were led in September to the nearby forest and shot at the edge of pits by the mobile detachment supported by Lithuanian auxiliaries. The Pivonija forest remains the site of Memory for the community.
