The Shoah (1939–1945)

Shooting of Kupiškis

7 septembre 1941·Kupiškis

Toll
plus d'un millier de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

After six weeks of confinement in barns and stables, the community is led out of the city and shot; the few men retained for work are killed shortly after, and not a single Jew remains in the district.

In Kupiškis, the men are taken first, accused of communist sympathies; the women and children remain a few weeks longer, crowded into the stables of a farmhouse on the outskirts, before being led to the woods where the pits are ready. The town, which had an ancient community endowed with schools and a house of study, has not a single Jewish inhabitant left by the end of autumn.
