A town of tanners and furriers northwest of Minsk, Smarhon saw its Jews registered, stripped of their goods, then taken in groups to pits in the surrounding area throughout the autumn and winter.
Smarhon, known for its tanneries and leather fair, had already been ruined and emptied of its inhabitants during the Great War. The community reconstituted between the two wars is gathered upon the arrival of the occupier, stripped of its possessions, then led toward the open pits on the outskirts of the town.
