The Shoah (1939–1945)

Massacre of Preiļi

9 août 1941·Preiļi

Toll
~1 500 morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The Jews of the town, held for several weeks in barns, are driven to a nearby grove and shot, entire families included.

Preiļi, a small town in Latgale, had a Jewish community large relative to its size. In August, its Jewish inhabitants were led out of the town and shot at the edge of pits dug in a nearby forest, by Latvian auxiliaries under the supervision of the security police. The execution swept away entire families in a single day, and the town lost its community all at once.
