Young Algerian Jews excluded from the army by the repeal of the Crémieux decree are gathered in this camp in southern Oran and assigned to chores without weapons or pay.

The abrogation of the Crémieux decree excluded young Algerian Jews from the army, who could no longer serve as citizens. They were grouped together at Bedeau, in the southern Oran region, in labor units without weapons or pay, assigned to fatigue duties, road construction, and the maintenance of billets. Those who had been non-commissioned officers lost their rank. The Bedeau camp thus received men whom the Republic had called to the colors and whom it now sent back to the pickaxe. Many would join the fighting after the landings, even before their citizenship was restored to them.
