On the line of the Transsaharan railway, the camp at Aïn el Ourak isolates its internees hours by road from any settlement. Distance is the guard: there is nowhere to flee, and escape attempts end in a return under escort followed by solitary confinement. Mail is censored, parcels searched. The men assigned to Aïn el Ourak work at grading and laying track, in a landscape of stone and wind where water is transported by cistern. The testimonies gathered at liberation dwell on the silence and the total absence of any horizon.
