The seven communities of Burgenland, established since the seventeenth century under the protection of the Esterházy princes, are driven out in a matter of weeks toward Vienna and the Hungarian border.
The communities of Burgenland, among the oldest in the Germanic world, are expelled in the weeks following the annexation. Their members are driven from their villages, sometimes placed on barges abandoned on the Danube, as no country is willing to take them in. The seven historic communities of the province, established there for centuries, disappear within a few months.
