pogrom in the Jewish quarter, hostages taken and community ransomed

The Russian army enters Austrian Galicia and occupies Lemberg in September. A pogrom breaks out in the Jewish quarter, hostages are taken, and the community is held for ransom.

Galicia is home at that time to one of the densest Jewish populations in Europe, subjects of the Habsburgs and enjoying civil equality for half a century. The Russian occupation moves them from one regime to another within days. Jews are collectively suspected of Austrian sympathies, and this suspicion will provide the pretext for the mass expulsions of the following year.
