Pogrom of the October Manifesto
octobre 1905·Vitebsk
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Jewish shops and houses looted
Jewish shops and homes were looted in Vitebsk during that same autumn.
Vitebsk was a city three-quarters Jewish, the one where Marc Chagall was then spending his adolescence. The pogrom there is among those whose memory has been transmitted only through family accounts and communal memorials, the city having been destroyed later and its population murdered. What is known of it therefore comes from those who had already left.
