Port de la mer d'Azov où l'on chargeait le blé et le charbon, Marioupol fut atteinte par la vague d'octobre comme toute la côte. Les quartiers juifs furent livrés à la foule ; les marchandises des entrepôts furent jetées à la mer ou emportées, et plusieurs boutiques brûlées. Les dockers et les ouvriers des usines voisines se joignirent au pillage. Les familles juives se cachèrent dans les maisons grecques du vieux quartier, la ville étant depuis longtemps partagée entre plusieurs communautés.
