notables imprisoned and tortured, the community burdened with a debt it would take decades to discharge

A ritual murder accusation is brought in Poznań, one of the oldest communities in Greater Poland. The notables are imprisoned and subjected to torture; the trial drags on for several years before the local courts before the community manages to bring it to an end through considerable payments to the authorities and the plaintiffs.

The debt incurred thereby will burden its finances for decades and contribute to its decline. The case is characteristic of eighteenth-century Poland, where such accusations multiplied: community councils dispatched emissaries to Rome to obtain papal refutations, such as the one written by Cardinal Ganganelli.
