Raid by the Haïdamaks

1734·Vinnytsia

Toll
inconnu

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

the community attacked

The Haidamak raid of that year struck Vinnytsia as it did the other small towns of Podolia. The community was attacked, its possessions plundered, its homes forced open.

These small towns — the shtetls — had neither walls nor garrison. Their security rested on the word of the Polish lord on whom they depended, and that word was worth nothing when the bands swept through the country faster than troops could assemble. The century would see these raids return in waves, each one eroding a little further the prosperity of the communities on the right bank.
