Vinnytsia, the regional capital of Podolia, harbored an important Jewish community attested from the 16th century onward. In the 19th century, Jews represented a significant proportion of the population and played a major role in commerce and crafts. During the Shoah, thousands of Jews from Vinnytsia were murdered by the Einsatzgruppen and Romanian forces in 1941.
