A public auto-da-fé was held in Séville against converts accused of judaizing.
Séville had seen, a few years earlier, the birth of the first tribunal of the Spanish Inquisition. The word auto-da-fé denotes the public ceremony at which sentences were read; those condemned to death were then handed over to the secular arm, which alone carried out the executions, the Church forbidding itself from shedding blood.
