Andújar experienced, like the other cities of the Guadalquivir valley, a riot against the New Christians.
These disturbances spread within a few weeks to almost all of Andalusia. They form the immediate backdrop to the founding of the Spanish Inquisition: the Catholic Monarchs would obtain it from the pope shortly thereafter, presented as the means of resolving through inquiry a question that the streets were resolving through fire. The remedy institutionalized suspicion rather than extinguishing it.
