In Jaén, the constable Miguel Lucas de Iranzo, who protected the conversos of the city, was assassinated in the cathedral during Mass; the new Christians were immediately massacred.
The episode shows that anti-converso violence also targeted those who defended them. It was not merely religious but social: the converts held municipal offices, fiscal positions, and ecclesiastical prebends, and driving them out freed up those positions. This is what the Inquisition, created a few years later, would accomplish through legal means.
