The civil war pitting Pierre Iᵉʳ of Castile against his half-brother Henri de Trastamare took on, from the pretender's side, the character of a campaign against the Jews, whom propaganda portrayed as supporters of the legitimate king and architects of fiscal oppression. The forces of Trastamare swept through the Ebro valley and sacked the Jewish quarters of Nájera and Miranda de Ebro.
The Castilian communities, prosperous and numerous, emerged ruined from this conflict, which would last more than a decade. The rhetoric forged at that time — the Jew as agent of the royal treasury and enemy of the people — would be taken up in the sermons that prepared the great uprising at the century's end.
