The community of Wels was destroyed during the Black Death.
The Upper Austrian town appears in the lists of annihilated communities alongside Enns, Linz, and Steyr; the possessions of the dead reverted to the duke and the council.
The town of Wels lived off its fair and its position on the route to Bavaria, and its handful of Jewish families held the credit of the local merchants; after the wave, the Jews of Upper Austria were found only in Enns and Steyr, until the general expulsion from the duchy.
