Black Death Massacres in Hesse
1349·Giessen
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the community destroyed
The community of Giessen was destroyed during the Black Death.
The borough of the landgraves of Hesse appears in the Memorbuch lists alongside its neighbors in the Lahn valley.
The community, small in number, lived from lending to the peasants of the valley. Its houses were taken over by the burghers; the Judaism of Hesse subsequently reconstituted itself in the seigneurial villages rather than in the towns.
