the community destroyed
The community of Thann, at the foot of the Rangen, was destroyed during the Black Death.
A Habsburg town and place of pilgrimage, Thann shared the fate of the other cities of Upper Alsace.
The community lived by lending to the vintners and miners of the valleys on the southern slopes of the Vosges. After the destruction, the town remained closed to Jews for several centuries, and those of the Sundgau were forced to settle in the surrounding villages.
