the community destroyed
The community of Saverne, a city of the Bishop of Strasbourg, was destroyed during the Black Death.
Bishop Berthold de Bucheck was one of the princes who took sides against the Jews during the crisis, and his city was not spared.
The city controlled the passage through the Vosges by the mountain pass that bears its name, and its Jewish community lived from lending to carters and to the villages of the plain.
