the destroyed community
The community of Altkirch, in the Sundgau, was destroyed during the Black Death.
The Sundgau subsequently became one of the regions where Alsatian Judaism reconstituted itself most densely, but in the villages rather than in the chief town.
The town held a market where the peasants of the region came to borrow against their harvest; the disappearance of the moneylenders disrupted this rural credit system for a generation.
