the Jews sheltered in a tower, killed or taking their own lives
In Lectoure, Jews pursued by the Pastoureaux took refuge in a tower of the town. Besieged and seeing that they would be captured, they took their own lives, with fathers killing their children, according to the account reported by the chronicles.
The episode at Lectoure is the most celebrated of this crusade and was immediately compared, in both Jewish and Christian Memory, to the massacre of York and the deaths in the Rhineland. The register of the inquisitor Jacques Fournier, the future pope, preserves the depositions of witnesses who had seen it.
