the community massacred
Cahors, a city of bankers and Lombard merchants, saw its Jewish community massacred during the passage of the Pastoureaux. The paradox is that the city lived by credit and that its most powerful moneylenders were not Jewish: the violence was therefore aimed not at a monopoly but at a designated group.
The Pastoureaux crusade is one of the first movements in which anti-Jewish violence arose from below, without the order of a prince or the preaching of a known cleric. It foreshadows what the great waves of that century would become: crowds in motion, which authority observed but could not hold back.
