the Jewish quarter attacked, Jews killed before the viscount put an end to it
A street brawl between a Christian fisherman and a Jew degenerates in Narbonne into a general riot. The assembled crowd turns on the Jewish quarter, pillages houses, and attacks the inhabitants before Viscount Aymeri, alerted, sends in his men and restores order.
The rabbi Meïr ben Simon of Narbonne, author of the *Milhemet Mitsva*, left an account of the episode and of the protection granted by the lord of the city. The Narbonne community, one of the oldest and most learned in the Midi, saw in this confirmation that its security rested solely on the goodwill of the local power.
