An accusation of ritual murder brought against the community of Chinon led the Jews of the town to the stake, in a meadow that long bore the name of Fosse aux Juifs. The account of Ephraïm de Bonn and the French Hebrew sources preserve its memory.
The affair closely followed that of Blois, where the same accusation had already cost an entire community its life, and took place during the reign of Philippe Auguste, who had expelled the Jews from the royal domain before recalling them. Chinon, in Touraine angevine, was not at that time the land of the King of France.
