Bury St Edmunds housed a great monastery and a Jewish community placed under the protection of the abbot. On Palm Sunday, the crowd attacked the Jewish quarter of the town.
Abbot Samson, chronicled by Jocelin de Brakelond, subsequently obtained from the king the expulsion of the survivors from the town and its environs, on the grounds that everything found there belonged to Saint Edmond and that Jews should not share in that inheritance. This is one of the earliest local expulsions in England, a century before the general expulsion.
The abbey had moreover promoted the cult of a child, Robert, whose death it attributed to the Jews, following the model of Norwich. These local cults, born in the twelfth century in Eastern England, furnished all of Europe with the matrix of the ritual murder accusation.
