The riots of the Third Crusade spread through eastern England after the massacre of York: Colchester, Thetford, Ospringe and Dunstable saw their communities attacked, their houses pillaged and their debt records destroyed.
This is the common feature of this wave: the rioters burn first the debt acknowledgements deposited with the Jews. Richard I, upon his return, ordered inquiries and fined several towns, then created the Exchequer of the Jews and the archae, public strongboxes where debts would henceforth be recorded in duplicate — the State drawing from the riot the means to better control what it had targeted.
