York, medieval city in England, is grimly famous in Jewish history for the massacre of 1190: during the Third Crusade, rioters forced the Jewish community to take refuge in Clifford's Tower, where survivors either committed suicide or were killed. This event, documented by the chronicler Guillaume of Newburgh, is one of the major tragedies of England's medieval Jewish community.
