Spanish Town, former capital of colonial Jamaica, hosted a Sephardic Jewish community among the first established in British America. A synagogue was founded there at the end of the 17th century; the Jews of Spanish Town enjoyed extended rights, notably the right to vote granted by the Jamaican legislature as early as 1832.
