City in northern Bulgaria, Pleven housed a Sephardic Jewish community documented since the Ottoman period. It was active in the trade of textiles and food; almost all Bulgarian Jews survived the Shoah thanks to the refusal of Bulgarian authorities to hand them over to the Nazis.
