Izbica (Lublin region) was an important center of Polish Hasidism, seat of the Izbica-Radzyn dynasty founded by Mordechai Leiner (the Mei HaShiloah). During the Shoah, the Nazis transformed the town into a transit ghetto: between 1942 and 1943, tens of thousands of Jews from Poland, Germany, Bohemia and Austria passed through before being murdered at Sobibor and Belzec.
