Ein Gedi, oasis on the shores of the Dead Sea in the Judean desert, harbored a prosperous Jewish community in Roman and Byzantine times, renowned for the production of Judean balsam. Excavations uncovered a Byzantine synagogue (6th century) with a remarkable mosaic and Hebrew inscription warning against the betrayal of the community's secrets.
