Dorohoi (Botoșani department, Romanian Moldavia) housed one of the most important Jewish communities in the region in the 19th century. On 1 July 1940, a pogrom perpetrated by Romanian soldiers claimed dozens of Jewish victims; the community was subsequently subjected to further persecutions and deportations under the Antonescu regime (1941–1944).
