Né à Będzin en 1838, gendre du rebbe de Kotsk, il devient l'un des plus grands décisionnaires (poskim) de la fin du XIXᵉ s. À partir de 1883 il est rabbin et av beit din de Sochaczew, fondant la dynastie de Sochatchov. Son fils Shmuel, auteur du Shem Mishmuel, lui succède.
