Petit-fils/descendant de la maison Mocatta & Goldsmid, dont il se retira en 1874 pour se consacrer à la philanthropie et à l'érudition juive. Auteur de The Jews of Spain and Portugal and the Inquisition (Londres, 1877) ; promoteur de la Society of Hebrew Literature, président de la Jewish Historical Society of England en 1900.
