Écrivain, éditeur et critique littéraire juif italien de Milan, issu d'une famille juive d'origine émilienne. Cofondateur de la revue littéraire Corrente (1938), contraint à l'exil (Grenoble puis Lugano) après les lois raciales fascistes de 1938. Fondateur de la librairie antiquaire puis maison d'édition Il Polifilo (1941). Lauréat du prix Bagutta 1970 pour L'invenzione, auteur notamment de Il Battello per Kew (traduit The Trunk), texte marquant sur la mémoire du fascisme et de la Shoah en Italie.
