Fort Cochin (Kochi), the Portuguese and later Dutch quarter of Cochin, hosted Paradesi Jewish merchants (White Jews of Cochin, of Iberian and Middle Eastern origin) in the 16th–17th centuries. These families subsequently settled permanently in Mattancherry, where the famous Paradesi synagogue was built (1568).
