The intercommunal violence of May reached Lod, a mixed city where Jews and Israeli Arabs have lived side by side since the founding of the State. Synagogues and businesses were set on fire, cars burned; a Jewish resident died of his wounds.
A state of emergency was declared over the city, something that had not happened in decades. What took place there belonged neither to war nor to terrorism, but to riot between neighbors — and that is what made it a shock, on both sides.
