Taking of hostages at Beth Israel synagogue (the four hostages emerge unharmed)

On January 15, 2022, an armed man who had traveled from the United Kingdom entered the Beth Israel synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, during Shabbat services, and held the rabbi and three congregants hostage for approximately ten hours, demanding the release of a federal prisoner. The scene was broadcast live for a time through the streaming of the service.

The hostages managed to escape thanks to a diversion attempted by the rabbi, who had undergone security training offered to American Jewish communities; the assailant was killed by intervention forces. The incident made such training standard practice in synagogues across the United States.
