Attack — Port of Ashdod
14 mars 2004·Port d'Ashdod
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The port of Ashdod is one of Israel's two major commercial ports: containers, hydrocarbons, and chemicals pass through it continuously. Two attackers infiltrate it concealed inside a container from Gaza and detonate themselves within the port compound.
The attack was aimed, according to the investigation, at the chemical storage tanks, which could have caused a catastrophe of an entirely different magnitude. It reveals the vulnerability of Israeli logistics installations to goods traffic and leads to a complete overhaul of container inspections and commercial links with the Gaza Strip, at the very moment when Israel's withdrawal from that territory was under discussion.
