The Megiddo junction, in the Jezreel Valley, is one of the major road intersections in northern Israel: the buses linking Tel-Aviv and Haïfa to Tiberias and the Golan Heights all pass through it. On June 5, 2002, a vehicle laden with explosives pulled up alongside an Egged bus coming from Tel-Aviv and detonated beside it; the bus caught fire. Some of the passengers were soldiers on leave returning to their base, which accounts for the proportion of military personnel among the dead. The attack was part of the deadliest wave of the Second Intifada, in the aftermath of Operation Defensive Shield: between March and June 2002, suicide attacks occurred at an almost weekly pace against buses, markets, and restaurants. Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.
