Port of Thessaly, Volos sees its community targeted by the spring roundup; warned by its rabbi and by the city's metropolitan, a large part had already dispersed into the villages of Pelion and into the mountains, so that the roundup seizes only a minority, taken to the transit camp and then to the killing camp.
Volos, a port in Thessaly at the foot of Pélion, was home to an ancient Romaniote community, augmented by Sephardic families from the north. Forewarned of the fate awaiting his people, the city's rabbi, Moché Pessah, acted in concert with the metropolitan and managed to move the greater part of the community into the villages of Pélion and toward the resistance groups. When the Germans came in spring to round up the Jews of Volos, they found only a minority, who were deported to the extermination center. Volos stands among the rare Greek communities of which the greater part survived.
