A town in Thessaly, Trikala sees its Jews arrested during the spring roundup, some having fled to mountain villages, others being taken to the capital's transit camp and then to the death camp.
Trikala, in western Thessaly, held a long-established Romaniote community, with its synagogue, school, and trades in textiles and commerce. Some families, warned of the fate of the northern communities, had made their way to the villages of the Pindus and the areas held by the resistance. In spring, the Germans gathered the Jews who had remained in the city and transported them by rail northward, then to the extermination center of the General Government. The community of Trikala was reduced to a handful of survivors.
