The Jews of Cluj, Oradea, Satu Mare and Târgu Mureș, attached to Hungary since 1940, were gathered in makeshift ghettos then deported to Auschwitz.
Northern Transylvania had been detached from Romania and annexed to Hungary in 1940: its Jews therefore fell, in the spring, under Hungarian measures, while those of Romania proper were spared.
The communities of Cluj, Oradea, Satu Mare, and Târgu Mureș were gathered into improvised ghettos, often in the open air, before being taken to Auschwitz within a matter of weeks. It was from one of these ghettos that the adolescent Elie Wiesel departed that year.
